Details

An intimate picture of the war is built up by the author using dairies, letters, films and photographs. From its prelude in the late 1930s, through the early illusions, to the grimness of Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. From the austerity of the middle years, through signs of social progress, and social deterioration, to the hazards of D-Day, and of flying bombs, and the jubilation of victory; and then in the aftermath, from the electoral defeat of Churchill to the creation of the Welfare state. All aspects are covered, the story woven around an extraordinary collection of photographs, many of them banned at the time by the censor. This book truly recreates the complex reality of life on the Home Front.

Softcover,192 pgs, very well illustrated, notes, further reading, index. Good, some foxing, owner’s name within.
