Details

The 68-month Battle of the Atlantic covered every part of the ocean – from Iceland to Cape Town, from the Gulf of Mexico to the coasts of Norway – and was the longest naval campaign of the 20th century. This book, generated by a major international naval historical conference in Liverpool, is a valuable and stimulating collection of writing by 36 of the world’s leading naval historians, who analyse the campaign comprehensively.

Expert contributions are provided by writers from Great Britain, the United States, Norway, France, Canada, Russia, Germany and Italy. They examine human and material resources, as Axis and Allied forces alike struggled to put more men, more ships, more U-boats, torpedoes and more aircraft into the conflict, balancing military needs, civil requirements and political considerations. Shipbuilding and repair, and submarine development, were fundamental to the campaign; the shortage of experienced fighting sailors as the campaign went on meant that training techniques had to be adapted to man the vessels as quickly as possible. The merchant navies also played a vital role adding to the men and ships at hand.

Air support was constantly subject to demands elsewhere as war continued across the globe. In the battle of technology the advantage swung sharply to and fro. Above all it was a battle of sheer human endurance and bravery on both sides, and at stake was the freedom not only of Great Britain but the whole of Europe. This book records the campaign in detail from both Allied and Axis viewpoints, with modern overviews of the whole campaign in context and its effect on post-war naval policies.

This is an outstanding, authoritative reference work on one of this century’s most crucial conflicts.

Softcover, 639 pgs, maps, notes, bibliography, index. Very good, spine slightly creased.
