Details

A detailed and mapped out record of Plantagenet County, providing the region’s history since its discovery, whilst revealing its vast richness and beauty in its surrounding area. Plantagenet County was explored in 1829 by Surgeon T.B.Wilson R.N., then later by Governor James Stirling and charted by Surveyor Septimus Roe. The resulting map showed forests and valleys of good land, lakes, swamps, lagoons and rivers. Between the Kent River and the Hay River was 'Rich and beautiful country'.

It is most appropriate that the history of Mount Barker and the Shire of Plantagenet should be written in the year 1977 because it was just 150 years ago that in 1827 the first white settlement was established at what is now Albany-then Fredericks Town: also because in 1829, the year of the establishment of the Swan River Settlement as a Colony, Dr Wilson, R.N., led an expedition from the southern settlement up the Hay River, climbed our namesake hill and named it Mount Barker in honour of Captain Collet Barker of the first regiment stationed at King George Sound.

Our history records the struggle against isolation and adversity by our early pioneers and traces the development of our district through their qualities of initiative and tenacity. It is a history of optimism and achievement and illustrates how a poorly equipped people - by today's standards - developed and consolidated the legacy which is ours today.

Hardcover, 412pgs, well illustrated, maps, appendices, notes, index. Very good, jacket slightly discoloured.
