Details

This book covers A. J. Ayer's autobiography from his appointment as Professor of Philosophy at University College London in 1946 to the birth of his second son by his second wife in 1963, when he was fifty-four. During this period the author's public life was one of conspicuous energy: his work resulted in many publications; he became a television personality as a regular member of the Brains Trust team, and he was invited to lecture in Russia, China, and America. A. J. Ayer's private life was no less rich. His wide circle of friends included some of the most brilliant men of his day, among them E. E. Cummings, Bertrand Russell, and J. B. S. Haldane, and he remembers his frequent love affairs with affection and frankness. In fact, his memory is as uncompromising as his dialectic, and he writes with instinctive modesty and honesty, finding humour in his failures and qualifications to his successes. It is with typical warmth that he concludes his book by testifying to the enduring and dominating happiness of his new-found family life. 'This is an engaging funny book that will live to be quoted.'
