Details

The book is a celebration of one of Ireland’s literary geniuses, one of the great comic writers of all time. Under many pen-names, including that of Flann O'Brien, Brian O'Nolan was a legend among Irish writers, creating his famous novel At Swim-Two-Birds while still a student, contributing a column to the Irish Times for a quarter of a century, and in the last days of his life making a spectacular return as a novelist. Even after his death, he had a surprise in store, for he left behind what many now consider to be his masterpiece, The Third Policeman.

All his life Brian O’Nolan guarded his private life. This book shows, however, what an important bearing his life had on his work. Brian O’Nolan is seen as a writer of major importance who used laughter to mock the absurdities of the world around him. His readers have always found him funny; Peter Costello and Peter van de Kamp reveal the tragedy and personal courage that lay behind the comic mask of Flann O’Brien.

Hardcover, 159 pgs, well illustrated with photographs, paintings, drawings and facsimile manuscripts, further reading. Very good, few marks on cover.
